Veteran Canine Companion of Engine Company No. 17 Laid
to Rest With Ceremony Befitting its Popularity
____________

One of the veterans of fire engine company No. 17 was laid to rest yesterday afternoon in the grass plot at the rear of the engine house at seventh street and Santa Fe avenue.  The ceremony was held in the presence of the full company, David Barry making an appropriate address.
"Bum," the fox-terrier mascot of the company, which for three years had been running to fires with the members of engine company No.17, lost his life while crossing the bridge spanning the river at Seventh street.  The engine was answering a call from the home of H. Carpenter, a
member of the engine company, at 3:15 yesterday morning.  With his customary alacrity, the enthusiastic little mascot started from the fire house as escort to the heavy engine, running along just behind the horses' hoofs.  The wheels of the engine struck the car tracks for an instant, skidded and that was the end of "Bum."
The mascot was adopted by the company three years ago, when a mere lonely puppy.  Since then "Bum: has responded to almost every fire the company has fought.  All members are mourning the loss of their mascot.
