With a complete outfit of new hose available, Engine Company 59 of the Sawtelle fire department is reported able to reach any fire that may break out in this district.  Increasing its supply so as to be able to serve the many fine estates being erected in the district at some distance from fire plugs the Sawtelle fire truck now caries 1500 feet of two and a half inch hose, and 300 feet of a smaller size making a total of 1800 feet available without calling on other companies.

The new hose has been tested to withstand an internal pressure of 400 pounds, several hundred pounds more than it will ever be called upon to carry.

According to members of the department, the company is equipped with a complete change of hose making it possible to carry the maximum amount at all time, hose not in use being suspended in the tower room where it can dry under proper conditions.

Whether completion of the street paving program in Brentwood, and the forthcoming improvements in Sawtelle will have any bearing on the current fire insurance rates, members of the fire department declared, would be a question for the underwriters to decide.  It was pointed out, however, that with paved streets, additional fire hydrants, and ample protection afforded by two companies of the fire department, the insurance rate should not be higher than it is in any other section of Los Angeles, and probably much lower than in many.
