AU REVOIR

Gee, fellows, I really hate to leave.
No fooling, it kind'a makes the old
      heart grieve;
When you've worked so long with a
      swell bunch of men.
It's hard to say goodby then.

But when the old years have rolled by.
The Big Chief looks you in the eye
And says, "Your time has come, your
      work is done.
Old boy, you've made your last run."

Well, there's not much else you can do.
For then you realize you are really
      through:
But I shall always recall like a duty call
      From the old fire hall----

That old spirit of Engine 43's ----
All for one and one for all.
If that's why they call us "hicks".
Then I'm mighty proud I worked in
      the sticks.
Now maybe you didn't know it----
  That I'm some of a half-witted poet.

Engineer Howard T. James farewell
speech to his parting comrades.
