FIRE ENGINE STUCK IN MUD

While on their way to a fire at 1328 Union avenue, Engine No. 13 ran into difficulties at Pico and El Molino when the apparatus became stuck in the mud between the street car tracks.  For forty minutes the firemen and members of the car crew struggled to extricate the fire wagon to no avail.  At last a tow was arranged to a street car and the engine ignominiously pulled onto a solid footing.  The fire, incidentally, had been extinguished by neighbors through the use of pails of water.

CITIZENS OBJECT
            TO BALKY HORSE
-------------

Pico Heights has raised its voice in protest against the maintenance of a balky horse at Engine Co. 13.  The residents want a horse that can be relied upon to get to fires.
Their ire was aroused by the refusal of the horse to respond to an exhibition run which Chief Lips had planned to convince the residents that their property is protected.  The horse refused to leave the house.  The chief's game was spoiled.
The exhibition run was planned for Wednesday afternoon.  After the disclosure of the "scandal," residents made inquiries and found that the horse constitutes one reason for the failure of the department to respond to alarms in a reasonable time.  They will ask the department to "fire" the horse, efforts of other dissatisfied citizens to "fire" Lips having warned them that efforts in that direction were useless.
