A Bad Day for Truck Company No. 4

Truck 4 overturned during a
routine company drill operating as a Water Tower. 

In the years prior to the innovation of the Ladder Pipe Assembly Truck Companies could operate as a Water Tower by strapping hose lines to the aerial ladder.

The drill site was located in 4''s First-In, adjacent to the L. A. River next to the First Street Bridge.

The cause of the accident was determined to be a combination of overextending the ladder (ladder was fully extended: 100 feet) with a loaded hose line and the placement of the ground jacks onto an unstable surface (sand).

First-House Rookie Ted O'Meila  was operating this hose line when the truck overturned.  He rode the ladder to the ground and miraculous was uninjured.
