New Quarters For Engine 1

The GRAPE VINE, MARCH 16, 1941

A couple of ex-Arson men tangled out at Eng. 1 last month when one (the Captain of the species) attempted to demonstrate the dangers of gasoline fires to a group of 60 children and their teachers.  The captain asked one of his men (called Pete) to bring him some gasoline.  This was done, but while the container was enroute back to the captain, someone deftly removed the gasoline and substituted water.  As soon as the container arrived, the captain is said to have taken particular care in keeping the children out of danger's reach.  "Back up, children, Way back!  This is extremely dangerous!"  The visitors didn't seem to think so however when after two boxes full of brunt matches littered the ground the "flammable" liquid still sat there as cold as an Engineer's fire helmet.  That other ex-Arson man we mentioned?  Well there was a Cook nearly dying with laughter out near the kitchen but he doesn't have anything to do with preparing meals.
